The Human Rights Campaign, in response to the California Supreme Court's ruling last week upholding Proposition 8, has released a video dedicated to spreading the word that the fight for marriage equality is far from over.
In a 6-1 decision, the court upheld Prop 8, the measure that made marriage officially only between a man and a woman in California. The proposition passed last fall with 52 percent of Californians supporting it. The court, however, said that the 18,000 marriages performed before the proposition was passed would remain intact.
Gay rights advocates have said they will move to put the matter back up for vote as soon as next year.
The video features marriage equality supporters from across the country expressing their concern for the decision in California, set to the tune of "I Won't Back Down" by Dawn Landes. It ends with the poignant message: "Our love didn't begin with a court decision, and it won't end with one either." Kenneth Cole Productions is a proud supporter of HRC.
The legal fight for same-sex marriage in California began in 2004 when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The California Supreme Court later ruled those marriages illegal, but the case went to the San Francisco Superior Court, which said the ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. The case then went to the state Supreme Court, which upheld the legality of same-sex marriages, until Prop 8 again made it illegal.
Four states now allow same-sex marriage: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and Iowa. Vermont will begin offering marriage licenses to same-sex couples in September. In New York, a bill introduced by Governor David Paterson that would legalize gay marriage has been passed by the state assembly and now resides with the Senate.
A bill legalizing same-sex marriage is expected to pass this week in New Hampshire and be signed into law by the governor.
