I happened upon this site by chance and was, frankly, moved by its simple message: save the world by helping a single girl. The Girl Effect began with the Nike corporation, but it also includes people from non-profits and government organizations. Together, they operate on the premise that by raising one girl out of poverty in countries throughout the world, the ripple effect will bring positive change to their whole communities. Multiply that by a few hundred thousand, and spread it across the planet, and the Girl Effect could improve life worldwide.

awesome!
I am being so inspired here today...
thank you!
I had not heard of the "Girl Effect" before seeing this video, but I did hear of one person affecting this kind of change. We were on a tour in Thailand and took a side trip in the northern mountains to see a hilltribe village. Here the people do slash and burn agriculture and move every 10 years because the the soil has been depleted. They live in 2 room houses on stilts where the women cook rice and vegetables and the men bring in the meat--the way they have done for centuries.
Our tour guide told us that she was supporting a 14 year old girl from the village so she could go into town to attend high school. When she was 18 she would move away from the hilltribe village to work in the city. However, our guide knew she would maintain contact with her family in the village so her education would have an effect on them as well. She also said she had selected an 8 year old to be the next girl whose education she would support after this girl had graduated.
At the time I thought it was a great idea. I had no idea it was part of a bigger movement.
It's why I sponsor a 9-year old girl in Mali. Save the Children has been doing this for years. All together, it's one big movement :).
iI wish all the young girls of Jamaica could see this and accept this reality
It's why I like Kiva.org's microloans. It helps people in poorer countries to be entrepreneurs. It's more for adults than kids, but it does provide lots of loans for women all over the world, and at interest rates substantially lower than others available to them, if there even are any others available.
where is this girl? the one and the right one.....??? how u will know if she is one...
