Kitchen Gardeners International is an organization devoted to getting people to grow their own food again. They hope to encourage Americans to plant a vegetable garden by getting the next president to plant one on the White House lawn. Sign their petition here, and share your thoughts on what should be planted in the forum.

There is some precedent for a veggie patch: President John Adams, the first president to live in the White House, installed a vegetable garden upon moving in, and edible gardens were maintained throughout the 19th century. During World War I, President Woodrow Wilson kept sheep to graze the lawn, demonstrating conservation to the nation.

And there's plenty of room for a garden; the White House property spans more than 18 acres. As one commenter on BoingBoing said, "Hell...with 19 acres, they should set up a CSA."
