Living with AIDS, Discovering Art

The New York Times ran a little piece in its "City Visible" section on Wayne Starks, a 52-year-old man who has had AIDS for the past 23 years, and who in 2001 received a scholarship to study art at the Educational Alliance Art School on the Lower East Side.

Before long, he realized that hidden beneath years of hardship -- poverty, heroin addiction, and a failed marriage -- lay a prodigious gift for sculpture.
