Sara Tucholsky is a Western Oregon University senior who plays for the school's softball team. She had never hit a home run in her four years as a player - that is, until this past Saturday night with two runners on base. On her home run trot, she missed touching first base and when she reversed direction to touch the bag - her knee buckled, she went down and was unable to get back on her feet to finish rounding the bases.
The options under the rules was to either replace Tucholsky at first base with a pinch runner and have the hit recorded as a two-run single instead of a three-run home run or assist her with a trainer or coach - but this would have resulted in an out as she was still an active runner.
Then something remarkable happened. A player from the opposing team asked 'would it be O.K. if we carried her around and she touched each bag?' The umpires approved and then the Central Washington first baseman, Mallory Holtman and their shortstop, Liz Wallace joined hands and carried Sara, supporting her weight and allowing her to tap each bag with her foot as they rounded the bases.
There are several sports moments that are imprinted on my memory: John Starks' dunk in Game 2 of the '93 finals against the Bulls, Dan Marino's fake spike against the Jets in '94, Reggie Jackson's three home runs in consecutive at-bats in the '77 World Series and more recently, David Tyree's catch from Eli Manning in Super Bowl XVII. I was lucky enough to witness all of these events but something tells me that even though I didn't watch the Western Oregon/ Central Washington game - this moment will be just as rich in my memory.

Hi Rob,
Hate to admit that the only sports I got into were the games my sons played. However, loved reading the above story. Imagine how life would be if we all"carried" each other.
We should all start our day with that in mind.

This is the first blog that I have ever joined and I think it's cool. Keep it up. I look forward to hearing from you every month.
